As the first post on this blog i will tell you a little something about bolt patterns. Please continue reading :)
A bolt pattern is a term used for the number of bolt holes and the circle's diameter on the wheels. This information is passed to the person responsible for fitting a new or used wheel on a vehicle. Getting the measurements correct is essential for a perfect fit and prevents any expensive and unwanted surprises. There are a few steps to make sure this is completed satisfactorily.
- Parking a vehicle with the engine off in a flat area with the parking brake is required for stability and safety. A car being used for parts should be raised or on stable ground.
- Count the bolts on the wheel and measure the diameter of a circle running through the center of each bolt. Both numbers will result in a correct measurement of a bolt pattern.
- The hubcap should be popped off with a screwdriver by placing it between the edge of a hubcap and the rim to jammy it off. All bolt patterns are the same for wheels.
- Count the bolts in the pattern. There will also be a circle of big nuts with bolts called lug nuts for keeping the wheel joined to the vehicle. Count the bolts and lug nuts. Vehicles usually have 4, 5, 6, or 8 lug nuts. The lug nuts should be left without covering after counting.
- Measure the distance between 2 parallel lug nuts for even-numbered bolts by taking a tape measure and measuring from the middle of 1 lug nut to the middle of the lug nut across from it. Make sure to cross the center starting lug nut.
- A bolt circle tool is an easy way to make measurements and to increase the chances of accuracy. They are available at specialty stores for vehicles. The user needs to place it over the lug nuts to show the bolts and then take a measurement.
The number of bolts and diameter will result in a measurement. Record the 2 numbers and divide the two with an "x." This measurement will be used to request the correct wheels for a vehicle. Give the diameter in inches or millimeters. This will depend on the location of the wheel purchase.
What if the person measuring is used to millimeters or inches but needs to give the measurement which is opposite to their knowledge? There are several conversion charts for bolt patterns on the internet.
These simple steps and some patience will result in an accurate bolt pattern measurement and an easy fitting.
